This creature used to scare me silly when I was a kid. But during my architecture studies, I found myself staying up all night, and it would keep me company. Slowly but surely, I started to trust both - them and myself. I realized that my feelings of anxiety and fear were actually mirrored by them. And simultaneously I understood that I don’t mirror their state of being.
I had forgotten about this observation until I recently noticed a lizard by my feet. It was totally still, the way only lizards cane be, and I sensed it paradoxical state of mind. Just as some languages have words others don’t have, some species have emotions humans have never known. A lizard, for instance, always seems to be in a simultaneous state of constant alertness and deep relaxation – totally in tune with its surroundings, both terrified of it all and in quiet love with it all.
We all have the potential to be in that state as well.
I believe, I have it too – but it terrifies me. Not because it cannot be reached. But because it is there for the taking.
